Tell me a little bit about you…

I am a student studying a BTEC in animal management. I have a dog and two cats and love getting out into the mountains. I’m passionate about the UK’s diverse wildlife and enjoy spending time watching the birds in my garden.

Do you consider yourself to have any mental health issues?

I got diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder just before I sat my GCSE’s and had to drop out of Sixth Form due to a mental breakdown. I am much happier at my new college and busy planning for University.

How do you think getting outside improves mental health?

It definitely does; when I’m feeling low having to take Otis on a walk can really brighten my day up. Seeing the seasons change and hearing the increase in bird song these past months has been wonderful.

Has someone ever initiated a conversation about their mental health with you and if so, can you tell me a little bit about this?

My parents were always very open about their mental health and I was always encouraged to talk if I ever felt like I was struggling.

Do you have a favourite place to go when you need some downtime, if so where?

My favourite place is up into the woods by Ross, being able to take my binoculars and watch the birds is a great escape from daily life.

Finally – What two items would you take with youth a deserted island?

One item would be an infinite supply of books! I couldn’t go without my reading but I would get bored of the same books. My other item would be binoculars so that I could watch the wildlife on the island.
