#10 UK Swim Spots
I am always being asked for advice on where to swim, particularly on the River Wye which is my patch. Its a tricky one as there has been a huge surge in wild swimming over the last year I am mindful that I don’t want places to become overrun or for nature to be adversely affected.
So, my list includes 10 well known wild swimming spots around the UK that are well documented. If you would like to know my top spots for swimming on the Wye then please do drop me a message and I will happily share!
In the meantime, please, please, go swim but follow these simple tips:-
5 ways to be wild and safe
Never swim alone, either have a swim buddy or someone with you close by on the bank
Don’t jump into cold water – take your time, go in gently, deep, controlled breathing, splash your arms and face with the water before plunging in
Wear suitable swimwear & footwear – wear a wetsuit, boots and gloves in the cold and gradually build up to wearing just a swimsuit. No prizes for wearing a bikini on your first swim!
Have loads and loads of layers for after the swim, the more the better, a hot drink and something to eat even on a warm day
Take your time to look at the water before getting in – the flow, the speed, where you can get in and out safely – don’t push yourself too far too soon – just enjoy the experience
L E A V E N O T R A C E - take your rubbish home with you
Always wash your kit between swim spots to avoid cross contamination of water sources and species

Somerset – Claverton Weir
Long curving weir by meadows, a long deep stretch above the weir and places for paddling too. This is where I first started outdoor swimming as a child. 3 miles east of Bath on A36, turn left at Claverton, down Ferry Lane, just before the sign for the American Museum

Gloucestershire – Backney Common, River Wye
My new favourite spot, close to where I live. Ancient common land, with gentle shelving shingle beach. Dogs to be kept on leads due to wildlife. From A449 Ross take the A49 to Hereford, then the first right by the village hall. 2 miles on bear right to Foy and after 300m turn right into the car park. Adjacent to the car park is a lane which leads to a gate and the common with river access.

South Wales – Keepers Pond, Blaenavon
A huge infinity pool with the most spectacular views over to Sugar Loaf and the Black Mountains. Vert easy access, which makes it incredibly popular so go very early, or late to avoid the crowds. On b4246, a mile from Blaenavon you will find the pond and carpark signposted
